“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life forever.” – Amy Poehler
When we think about the performing arts for children, it’s easy to focus on the idea of creating “stars” – performers who go on to professional success, and “made it”. And while that is certainly something worth celebrating, for the vast majority of students, the true value of theatre lies elsewhere. Our classes give children the opportunity to learn new skills, apply them to everyday life, and most importantly have fun while doing it. Confidence, collaboration, empathy, communication, and resilience are lessons that extend far beyond the stage.
At Upstage our aim is to take a more ensemble approach, a societal approach, to our programs. We aim to build a supportive environment for families and performers alike, ensuring that no child is discouraged by the idea that talent is something “you’ve either got or you haven’t”. That philosophy is reflected in how our shows are structured. Chorus members stay active and engaged, with meaningful moments to shine, while principal roles are often shared. This ensures that every child feels valued and essential to the production.
When parents attend a performance at the end of the rehearsal process, we want it to feel like a true team effort, an ensemble carrying the story forward together. There may be standout solo moments, but the real success of the show is measured by the strength, confidence, and unity of the group onstage.
