South Pasadena could be considered the home of Upstage Theatre Arts Schools, as Artistic Director Adrian Cohen started his first classes in the city in 1999. Since then Upstage has produced over thirty shows and classes in the South Pasadena community, and very quickly established itself as one of the best summer and after school theater programs for young performers in the Greater Los Angeles area.
Adrian and the rest of the teachers have created a friendly, and supportive environment where young artists can have a safe place to create, have triumphs, make mistakes, and walk away knowing they were a part of something so special. We have seen students year after year who continue on in the theatre, or on a completely different path where they were able to take these skills with them and share with the world- just take a look at some of our testimonials.
We haven’t got complacent with our programs as we always to strive to provide children and teenagers with a fulfilling theatrical experience and have continued to expand our offering. Beginning with the innovative production of Hairspritz, the Teen Camp was added to the Summer Camp lineup, and we have added tap dancing and improvisation classes to the mix.
Upstage South Pasadena runs two summer camp programs for juniors in which students focus on the production of a show over a three week period culminating in a fully staged production complete with lights, costumes and scenery in a fully equipped theater. We also run a series of after school classes throughout the year. So, whatever aspect of theatre arts young people are interested in, Upstage in South Pasadena has something to offer them in a fun and friendly environment that will help them in whatever passion they find in life.
Adrian Cohen started a summer camp in Westwood in 2009 in response to the interest and demand shown by children and parents for good performance skills education in the area, and it has grown into a huge community of families who are all so supportive of the arts and kids who are given an opportunity to let go and be fully themselves!
The camp began life as the Westwood Stage School before Adrian brought it under the umbrella of Upstage Theatre Arts Schools, his well-established theater arts organization operating out of South Pasadena, where we now have 24 successful programs running year round.
Like its sister school, Upstage Westwood offers young performers the opportunity to develop their skills in acting, singing, and dance. The school currently runs three sessions of summer camp focusing on the production of a show from rehearsal through to final performance in a theatre, and complete with costumes, lighting and scenery. In addition to the summer camp, we also offer after school programs, tap classes, voice classes, and year round after school camp.
Upstage Westwood provides young actors, singers and dancers with a creatively stimulating and enjoyable environment for them to develop their confidence, make new friends and demonstrate their talents.
